Rubel Shah, Akaru and the leitmotif of lettering.

Rubel Shah, has long fascinated me with his work. After many failed attempts, I was finally successful in cornering the calligraphy / lettering wizard from Bangladesh. Am publishing his response to my queries in both Bangla and English as a test case. Excerpts:

Pen Lovers Kolkata: You have fondly christened yourself “Akaru” – one who draws / sketches/doodles. Why?

Rubel Shah: আসলে বিষয়টা এমন নয়। আমি আঁকাআঁকি পছন্দ করি, এই আঁকাআকি বলেন আর দাগাদাগি বলেন সব। এগুলো করতে গিয়ে একটা সময় দেখলাম চর্চার প্রেক্ষিতে কিছু উপকরণ লাগে এবং তার প্রচন্ড রকম অভাব আমাদের দেশে। বিশেষ করে ক্যালিগ্রাফির জিনিসপত্র তখন আমি কিছুকিছু জিনিস দেশের বাইরে থেকে আনতাম (যেহেতু আমি কাজের প্রয়োজনে দেশের বাইরে যেতে হয় প্রায়ই) সাথে বাড়তি কিছু নিয়ে আসলে সেগুলো অন্য কারো সাথে শেয়ার করতাম। এভাবে শেয়ার করতে গিয়ে আমার কাছে কয়েকজন বললো যে একটা পেইজ করে এগুলো শেয়ার করলে ভালো হবে।
আসলে সেই ভাবনা থেকে একটা পেইজ করা হয়েছিলো আঁকারু নামে, এরপর থেকে পরিচিত অনেকেই আঁকারু বললেই আমাকে বোঝে। কর্মজীবনে আমি মূলত Product developer & researcher। ক্যালিগ্রাফি করি, ডাকটিকিট সংগ্রহ, পুরনো বাংলা নথিপত্র এবং কলম, কালি ও কাগজ সংগ্রহ করি।

If I speak precisely, it is not exactly like that. I like drawing or you may call it either painting or doodling as your wish. While doing this, I found that the required tools to do these things are quite rare in our country especially the tools required for calligraphy. I had to often go abroad for my job, in the meanwhile I purchased those things and brought them back with me. If there were surplus, I shared them with other enthusiasts. This has become a regular practice after some time and then people suggested that I should create an online page and then share it through that page.

That idea encourages me to found an online page titled “Akaru” and with that many people address me as “Akaru”. In my professional life, I work as a product developer and researcher. Besides that, I do calligraphy, collect stamps, collect historically significant documents along with a pen, ink and paper.

 Pen Lovers Kolkata: When did this passion start? What is your favourite medium? Why?

Rubel Shah: আঁকাআঁকির এই আবেগ কখন আমার মধ্যে এসেছিলো তা সঠিক ভাবে বলতে পারবোনা। তবে আমার ছোটবেলা কেটেছে পুরান ঢাকায়, বড় মামা আর্টিস্ট ছিলেন, পুরান ঢাকায় তখন সিনেমার বড় বড় ব্যানার আঁকতে দেখেছি।
মামাকে তুলি দিয়ে আঁকতে দেখতাম বইয়ের প্রচ্ছদ। এগুলো একটা কারণ হতে পারে। তবে আমার কাছে মনে হয় আমার ভাষা, আমার নদী, আমার মানুষ, আমার দর্শন আর আমার প্রকৃতির অনুপ্রেরণায় গত দেড় যুগ ধরে ক্যালিগ্রাফি মিশে আছে আমার জীবনে – পেশাগত ভাবে নয়, মনের খোরাক হিসেবে।

আমি আসলে ট্রেডিশনাল ক্যালিগ্রাফি করি এবং বাংলা, কালো রঙে একদম ফ্রী হ্যান্ড ক্যালিগ্রাফি। আর কালো রং এর মাঝে সব কিছু লুকিয়ে রাখা যায়, যার চোখ আছে সে বুঝতে পারবে, সে পড়তে পারবে …

I can’t exactly pinpoint when this passion came to me. I have spent my childhood in Old Dhaka and there I saw my uncle drawing large banners for Cinemas and Movies as he was an artist. He also did several covers of many books with brush, which can be an inspiring factor behind my interest. When I come to think of it, my language, the long perennial rivers running across this delta island, people of my country, my philosophy, and the tranquility of nature inspired me and flow my motivation towards calligraphy that persisted for the last two decades, not as my profession, rather satisfying the hunger of my intellectual needs.

Pen Lovers Kolkata: Your calligraphy is peerless, how and why did you take up calligraphy in Bengali?

Rubel Shah: আমার কাজ হয়তো সবাইকে মুগ্ধ করবেনা, হয়তো কাউকে কাউকে করে। আর এই মুগ্ধতা আসলে ভালো লাগার ভিতরে। ছোটবেলায় কিছু হতে চেয়েছি কিনা মনে নেই, তবে আমি মানুষ দেখতাম – প্রতিটা মানুষই যেনো এক একটা গল্প। তখন ছবি আঁকতে পারতাম না তাই ছবিতে সেই গল্পের রূপ দিতে পারিনি। চেষ্টা করতাম গল্প লিখতে, কবিতা লিখতে। এই লেখালেখি বা দাগাদাগি করতে করতে শব্দগুলো গল্পের রূপ নিতে থাকে বাংলা ক্যালিগ্রাফিতে আর সেই থেকেই বাংলা ক্যালিগ্রাফির প্রতি ভালোবাসা।

Well, my works won’t charm everyone, perhaps only a few. And this charm drives my spirit and passion for calligraphy. I can’t exactly recall if I ever cherished a dream to be in some particular professions when I was young, but I was always keenly observing people. It appeared to me that each person himself is a story and I wanted to indulge myself in that story. As I was not very skilled in drawing back them, I couldn’t portray those stories into images. Instead, I tried to write stories, poems. From that scribbling of stories, I turned into doodling and calligraphy, and then it drew out the passion that I have for calligraphy.

Pen Lovers Kolkata: What are the challenges faced by you as a calligrapher?

Rubel Shah: এটা খুব স্পর্শকারত প্রশ্ন, বলতে গেলে অনেক কথা বলতে হবে। শুধু এতটুকু বলি, আমি যখন কারো কাছে যেতাম বা গিয়েছি তখন তাদেরকে দেখতাম তারা আরবি নিয়েই বেশী মাতামাতি করে, আমি যখন বাংলার কথা বলতাম, তারা তেমন পাত্তা দিতো না, এর পরথেকে আর তেমন কারো কাছে যাইনি। নিজে নিজেই কাজ করেছি। এখন তাদের অনেকই বাংলা কাজ করে। তবে তারা যা করে, তাকে ক্যালিগ্রাফি বলা যাবেনা বলতে হবে, calligraphy painting।
আর সাপোর্ট পাওয়া একটা গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয়, আপনি যে কাজই করেন না কেনো, আপনি যদি আপনার আশে-পাশের মানুষের সাপোর্ট পান, তাহলে আপনি কোন একসময় ভালো একটা অবস্থায় চলে যাবেন।

This is a quite sensitive topic and If I start talking, there is a lot from where that will come from. In brief, whenever I went to someone regarding this almost every one of them was working on Arabic Letters. None of them paid any heed when I expressed my interest in Bangla Calligraphy. After some time, I stopped reaching other people and started on my own. Now-a-days, a lot of those people from back then are working on Bangla Alphabet. I feel that what they are doing is more like Calligraphy Painting rather than actual Calligraphy. The other thing is very important here, whatever you do, support from peers is essential. If you do have that patronizing from your peers, you can walk a long way and be in a decent position.

Pen Lovers Kolkata: What is it that you look forward to as an artist in Bangladesh?

Rubel Shah: আমি চাই শুদ্ধ চর্চা হোক, বর্ণের বিকৃতি না হোক, বাংলায় চর্চা হোক এবং অন্য ভাষার মানুষও যাতে বাংলায় কাজ করতে আগ্রহী হয়ে ওঠে।

I want people to practice and work maintaining purity. People should practice and spread more in Bangla Calligraphy and we should also establish a culture where someone from a different language might be interested to work on Bangla Calligraphy.

Pen Lovers Kolkata: Do you see more young people becoming interested in Pen & Ink, what needs to be done to ensure that this resurgence is sustained?

Rubel Shah: হ্যাঁ, নতুন প্রজন্ম কাগজ, কলম, কালির বা আঁকাআঁকির প্রতি আগ্রহী হয়ে উঠছে। তবে আরেকটা বিষয় স্পষ্ট দেখা যাচ্ছে যে, এই আগ্রহীদের অনেকই রাতারাতি জনপ্রিয় হয়ে উঠতে চায়, কেউ কেউ মনে করছে এগুলো মনে হয় কম্পিউটারে কোন সফ্টওয়ার দিয়ে করা যায় এবং এদের অনেকেই তা করছে। আসলে ফেসবুকে কাজ পোষ্ট করার মাধ্যমে হয়তো পরিচিতি পাওয়া যাবে, অনেক লাইক, কমেন্ট পাওয়া যাবে। কিন্তু দিন শেষে একজন প্রকৃত শিল্পীর জন্য চর্চাটাই হলো আসল হাতিয়ার। আর এই চর্চা করতে হবে ম্যানুয়ালি, কাগজে কালি-কলম দিয়ে, তা না হলে শিপ্লের সাথে শিল্পীর প্রকৃত যোগাযোগ হয়ে ওঠবেনা।

I see several people from the young generation are interested in paper, ink, pen, and drawing, which is very encouraging. But there is something we should be cautious too, a significant portion of them are using this media to be overnight celebrities. Some people think, this is just something that can be done using some software, few of them are doing that too. The motivation behind this is probably the desire to become more popular in social media, likes, comments, and love reactions. But a true artist focuses on his skills and practices, and this is his primary weapon. And this practice can only be run through pen and paper otherwise the connection between the artist and art becomes distant.

Pen Lovers Kolkata: What is your message to aspiring calligraphy/lettering artists on both sides of the border?

Rubel Shah: রং নয় বিষয়কে গুরুত্ব দিতে হবে। নিয়মিত চর্চা করতে হবে। এখন দেশে অনেক সামগ্রী পাওয়া যায় ক্যালিগ্রাফির জন্য, নতুনদের জন্য এগুলোই যথেষ্ট, এর বাইরে গিয়ে কোন টুলস ভালো এসবের পিছনে তাড়িত না হয়ে বরং হাতের কাছে যা পাওয়া যায়  তা দিয়েই টুলস বানিয়ে নিতে হবে নিজের মত করে। নিজেকে তৈরী করতে হবে বড় পরিসরে কাজ করতে পারার জন্য এবং নিজের কাজকে উপস্থাপন করতে। আরেকটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ যে বিষয়টি হচ্ছে বর্ণের অঙ্গহানি করা যাবেনা। এটা অনেকই করে থাকে, এটা খুবই গর্হিত কাজ। এটা খেয়াল রাখতে হবে।

Focus on the subject rather than the colour. There is a lot of tools that you can find now-a-days, and for starters, these are enough. Don’t just drive yourself towards higher-end, top-notch sophisticated products. Rather use the tools that are readily available, or can be easily built by DIY. You need to prepare yourself for working on a bigger ground where you will be representing yourself. Also, don’t disfigure a colour, this is quite common practice now-a-days, regularly being done by a lot, but it is a very ominous sign.

Pen Lovers Kolkata: Any message for our readers?

Rubel Shah: ছোটবেলায় কিছু হতে চেয়েছি কিনা মনে নেই,  তবে আমি মানুষ দেখতাম – প্রতিটা মানুষই যেনো এক একটা গল্প। আমার ভাষা, আমার নদী, আমার মানুষ, আমার দর্শন আর আমার প্রকৃতি থেকে অনুপ্রেরণা নিয়ে আমি বাংলা ক্যালিগ্রাফি করি। এই বাংলা ক্যালিগ্রাফি মিশে আছে আমার জীবনে – পেশাগত ভাবে নয়, মনের খোরাক হিসেবে। প্রকৃতিকে বোঝার আর মানুষের গল্প শোনার নেশায় বুঁদ হয়ে দেশের এপ্রান্ত থেকে ওপ্রান্তে ছুটে বেড়িয়েছি ছোটবেলা থেকেই। সৌভাগ্য হয়েছে অনেকগুলো দেশে কাজের প্রয়োজনে কিংবা নিছক অপ্রয়োজনে ঘুরে দেখার। ইচ্ছে আছে পুরো দুনিয়া ঘুরে দেখবো। এক জীবনে হয়তো এত্তটুকুই আমি। তেমনি আপনিও আপনার কাজে আন্তরিক হলে দেখবেন এর চেয়েই আনন্দ আর কিছুতে নেই।
যে যাই করুন না কেনো, মনের আনন্দ নিয়ে এবং মনে আনন্দে করেন।

I had the pleasure to visit a lot of countries for the sake of my professional work or just merely to satisfy my own need. I wish to travel the whole world someday. Maybe that is enough to define me.
